Sacramento, California is the capital of California and the county seat of Sacramento County. As of 2008, its estimated population was 463,794 placing it as the seventh largest California city. Sacramento serves as the economic and cultural center of the Sacramento Metropolitan region. Historically, Sacramento was a major distribution point during the California gold rush, providing access to commercial and agricultural goods. Sacramento is home to California State University, Sacramento. The University of California, Davis is located 15 miles away. The California State Legislature moved to Sacramento in 1854 and has stayed there since. State government is the largest employer in Sacramento. Despite the closing of several local military bases in Sacramento, the city has continued to grow primarily as the result of residents seeking a cheaper alternative to the high housing costs in San Francisco, in addition to immigration from Latin America and Asia. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, writer Joan Didion and astronaut Stephen Robinson are a few of the famous people with ties to Sacramento.
