Here, a jury determined that the City of Elk Grove was at fault due to roadway negligence. Roadway negligence includes such things as a city's failure to install appropriate signage, improper lighting and excessive foliage or debris. When a city creates or allows dangerous roadway conditions to exist that lead to a car accident, the municipality may be held liable and required to compensate those injured.
Although the jury awarded Liu $18 million, a pretrial agreement capped the damages at $6 million.
